Walk of shame

May 4, 2007 10:03 AM

The other day, I take my son to get his hair cut and to see if they have a good dandruff shampoo because he'd been scatching his head lately. I know what you're thinking - check his head for lice. Well, of course I did that and I couldn't find any. But he still was itchy. After his haircut, the barber said, "See how his scalp isn't flaky? Those are lice."

Mortified, I apologized profusely for infecting his shop. But he was non-plussed (spelling?). "We get mothers in here all the time bringing their kids in with lice." Did that make me feel better? Definitely. Will I ever go back there? Not sure.

I know the drill, but it doesn't make it any easier. I had a pit in my stomach as I approached the register at CVS. Not a religious person, I actually prayed that no one would see me - that I wouldn't have to make small talk as the Rid glared and glowed on the counter.

It came back to me all too hauntingly - the first time I bought cigarettes, the first time I bought tampons - I mean, come on, CVS is just an emporium of embarassing products. No one goes up with bravado and plops down their foot fungus spray and hemorrhoid cream.

I think next time I'll drive to one farther from home just so I don't run into anyone I know.

Won't you just be more likely to bump into all the people you know from your neighborhood who have also driven to one further from home :D

Nina,

Just a note to make you feel better, I discovered lice on my daughter, not the egg kind but the running through your hair freak you out kind, while holding her as she was having an abcessed tooth pulled. I too thought she had dandruff and complained to much about a sore tooth. Poor little drama queen, her not me, this time she wasn't crying wolf. Out of guilt the tooth fairy brought a game boy for that tooth. Yes, there are so many ways to screw your child up....I'm trying all of them.

Nina,

I think that you have to step back and forgive yourself...you are not a bad Mom...We just have to all take time to keep an eye on our kids scalps. Last year, my two girls had lice...I was also infected by the time we found out. My parents are from the old school...poor unclean people get lice...so I had to deal with them, cancelling a year long planned trip to my god-daughter's graduation and also stay in incubation for a month which felt like a year...but we survived and you know what...no one died. I know you feel terrible now...just as I did...but, take a deep breath. This too shall pass....Good Luck. Janet
