This Is How Easily My “Diet” Falls Apart

July 3, 2008 12:43 PM

So yesterday afternoon Larry says he will come home early and we can all meet for dinner at our favorite Mexican place. I am so excited because Larry NEVER comes home early, unless there is a natural disaster or something. I decide in advance, like a good mindful eater, exactly which salad I will have at the Mexican place, thereby ensuring that I will not give in to the oh-so-tempting chimichanga when I sit down and see it on the menu.
So Andrew needs new shoes for his sailing camp so I decide to pile all 4 kids into the car to go the sporting goods store on our way to meet Larry for dinner. Big mistake.
My euphoria at the prospect of having an early dinner on a weeknight with my whole family quickly evaporated as I found myself chasing Jamie around the store, trying to pry Matt off the top of the climbing wall, and imparting to Jenna for perhaps the 10 millionth time, “when we are in a store we look but WE DO NOT TOUCH!!!” Clearly I morphed into a nightmarish shrew and had to take a few deep breaths when that ordeal was over and we were back in the car and safely strapped in.
So we get to the Mexican place, I am still basically hyperventilating from stress, and I immediately down a very large frozen strawberry margarita, which I had not planned on but let’s face it I really needed it. The basket of chips was right in front of me and so was the big order of guacamole, and let me tell you something this place makes the BEST guacamole. Anyway. I probably consumed 1,000 calories before my nice healthy salad even arrived at the table. And then I felt better.
Stress eating, it works every time.
