Mindless Escapism

Given that the world as we know it seems to be coming to an end, I have decided it is time for a bit of mindless escapism. For me, watching tv and reading have always been favorite modes of escape. I wish I could say working out is a form of escape for me, like it is for my friend Shannon, but sadly it is merely a chore on my to-do list.

Ok so here it is…drumroll please… my favorite things when I need to get away:

1. The Daily Show with John Stewart (my longest-running form of escapism)

2. Mad Men (John Hamm… sigh… need I say more?)

3. Project Runway (The kids and I are all addicted)

4. The internet (Huffingtonpost.com for news, wonkette.com for politics, coolmompicks.com, dooce.com, and mommytrackd.com for mommy stuff; defamer.com and gawker.com for fun… these are just a few of the sites I visit nearly every day)

5. Music. Did I mention I attended the Madonna concert at Madison Square Garden Monday night? Pure bliss.

6. Books. I am in the middle of reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s amazing collection of stories, Unaccustomed Earth.

7. Friends. There is nothing like a girls’ night out to help you temporarily forget about everything serious in life!

8. Movies. I love getting a big bucket of popcorn and losing myself at the movies.

9. Time alone with my DH, Larry. He always makes me feel like everything is going to be ok… even when all other signs point in a different direction.

10. Family night at home. I LOVE a night at home with all 6 of us. We play board games, watch movies, make a big meal, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is we are all together.

What about you? How do you escape from reality and find a few minutes of pure bliss in the midst of the chaos and craziness that is our world today?

  1. I, too, have several means of “escape from the real world.”

    Television is an unfortunate one…

I love to take my two year old out for walks and listen to her talk. Yesterday, she happened to be carrying along a bunny and it was quite windy outside. She lovingly comforted the bunny by saying, “It’s okay, it’s just a windstorm…” So, that’s a great escape to view the world through a child’s innocent eyes.

I love reading, but it’s hard to really get into a book amidst potty training and a child that hates to sleep =)

One of my most favorite escapes has always been playing the piano… I started writing music when I was ten, so I always say music is a language of it’s own, and helps me to get out whatever I’m feeling at the time.

  2. My “escapes” include making time for my girlfriends and going out for coffee or a good chick flick, working out and playing my ukulele- music is so therapeutic. Shopping would be another one if I didn’t have to stick to a budget. ;)

  3. If I were you I would not have posted your political views (cleverly masked in an ‘escapism’ post). I have loved my MomAgenda products but won’t buy any more since I would be supporting someone who (in my opinion) has such damaging political views. Such a shame that people feel entitled to push their poltical views on others in what should be a professional or retail setting.

  4. Ouch! I am really sorry you feel that way. The fact is that I have never expressed my political views on this web site, despite any assumptions you may have made. My “mindless escapes” are simply my guilty pleasures in life.

We at momAgenda appreciate your comment.

  5. Hi Nina!

I love the new school days organizer! You are so right about the world just being too much sometimes and our need for escapism. I turn to family or a book. To my DH’s chagrin, I unplug the cable and turn out the jigsaw puzzles and board games for a few days, or weeks!! Seems to get us back on board.

  6. Hi Nina,

We all need to escape from time to time, it’s what let’s us reconnect with ourselves family, friends and spirit. I love going fir a walk before picking the kids up or after dropping off. I love to read in front of a fire with a cup of tea. I try daily to have a tea session with my 3 children after school where we talk about our day, have a snack and read before diving into homework.

DH and I treat each other to breakfast in bed on Saturday’s alternating weekends for the cooking.

All the best to you. I adore my Mom Agenda and the time it save me!

    Cynthia
