Gift Giving Series: Part 1, Gifts for Mom

November 13, 2008 8:00 AM

As complicated and fraught the relationship can be between mother and daughter, the holidays are a time to put aside differences and appreciate each other. What does your mom love? If her grandchildren are her passion, that makes your job easy. Consider a custom album filled with pictures of her beloveds. You can create them easily on many of the photo web sites; I use iPhoto. Or, pick a piece of artwork from each of your kids -- face it, you probably have enough artwork to wallpaper your whole house -- and put each piece of art in an inexpensive frame for her to display in her home. Does she have a special hobby? Check out web sites related to her special interests, and see what gadgets are must-haves. Maybe she loves cultural activities: how about tickets to a show, or a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant? The key is to tailor the gift to her unique self. Please don't get her the old hat-scarf-gloves combo; you can give that to just about anyone. Give her something that acknowledges her uniqueness, because it will make her feel special.
As a final note, many of you already know that my mom passed away 12 years ago. Do something special for your mom this holiday season; I wish I could.
