What, Me Worry?

July 29, 2009 3:56 PM

Ever since I have become a mom, and possibly before then too I just can't really remember that far back, I have been searching for peace of mind. For moms, peace of mind does not come easily. We start worrying when the kids are babies, and don't really stop... ever. I think I actually worry more now that I have a teenager than I did when my kids were babies! A wise, older mom of 8 grown children once told me that if she had known then how much she was going to worry, maybe she would not have had so many children.
And it's not just worry about our kids health and safety that impacts our own inner lives. We worry about their grades. Their social lives. Is there anything more stressful than worrying about your kid being tormented socially? What about the stress of managing the logistics of their lives?
To illustrate the elusiveness of peace of mind in my life, here is a partial list of things I worried about yesterday:
Does my 9 year old have a virus that is causing his severe bloody nose?
Should I take him to the doctor?
If I don't take him to the doctor because I have to go to work am I doing a bad job as a mother?
Did I spend enough time reading to my 6 year old?
Should I be concerned 6 year old is not yet reading to himself?
If he can't read soon am I doing a bad job as a mother?
Will my 13 year old hate me forever?
Am I doing a bad job as a mother?
Did I remember to schedule all the back to school physicals?
Did I miss the signups for fall dance?
Will my kids never amount to anything because I neglected to sign them up for that one thing that might have sparked their interest for life?
Will my husband be mad I only made soup for dinner?

What about you? What did you worry about today?
