I’ve Got The Urge To Purge

No I do not have an eating disorder, the purging I am referring to is the purging of my home.

Let me explain. Over 14 years of marriage, Larry and I, in addition to having 4 children, have accumulated mountains upon mountains of junk. Part of the reason for this is that we have had 4 children over the last 14 years–enough said. Part of it is that my mother passed away, and when that happened, all her furniture (not to mention the contents of her basement) came to my house to live. Ok, full disclosure, my mom died 13 years ago, so maybe it has taken me a long time to part with the junk. But that is clearly a completely different blog post…

Anyway, I found this fabulous company online called Junkluggers, and they are an “environmentally friendly” junk lugging service. This basically means they will recycle or donate as much of our stuff as they can, and even provide me with a tax-deductible receipt for all the junk they are able to donate. Everything else will be disposed of properly. Best of all, all the junk is going to be GONE, and I don’t have to lift a finger!

You may ask why don’t I have a tag sale, or just go to the donation center, or go to the dump, myself? The answer is that we have so much junk, and so little time. Our basement and garage are filled with boxes upon boxes of stuff, not to mention old furniture, kitchen stuff, you name it. While we could have a tag sale, that would not solve the problem of all the garbage. And if we just got a dumpster, we would still have a garage full of stuff to donate. We are both so busy with the kids and work, and neither of us want to spend our time dealing with this issue, so this is the perfect solution for us.

My dear husband has anxiety about the Junkluggers’ visit. To quote him directly, he feels that I “have a tendency to throw away whatever is not nailed down.” I promised him that I would not throw away any of his guitars or related equipment, nor his golf clubs (though I would like to) nor his tools (not that he ever uses them, but I will let him continue the illusion that he does). Apparently that is not enough reassurance for him; he has decided to take the day off from work so he can be here to supervise.

Wish me luck on my odyssey to free my home from all the extraneous stuff. Clearly I am way more excited than is appropriate; I feel like a teenager waiting for prom night. It’s just that getting organized gets me really excited. But you guys knew that already:)

  1. OHH I wish you a huge amount of patience and luck!! I started the purging process of my home the beginning of the summer. Granted I have been working on it alone as my husband is always at work, so it is taking some time. But, each time I get another area cleaned up, my whole world seems a bit lighter.

Best of luck, and a toast to a lighter brighter world for you!!
