Since you all have been so understanding about my frustrations this week with Jamie’s (me and Larry’s) school project, I am sharing a photo with you so you can see exactly how cute Jamie was at his (our) U.N. Festival this morning, and how proud he was of his (our) project.
And let me tell you, as we walked around the room viewing the other children’s (parents’) projects, there was no question in my mind that this was ALL done by the parents. For example, the Ireland table was practically sagging from the weight of all the artifacts and scones and Irish soda bread. Some of the “ancestor dolls” were so beautifully crafted and wardrobed, they could have been created by Martha Stewart herself.
As you can see from the photo, we did not really go that route. We made a display with Italy-related pictures we printed off the internet, and Jamie’s doll represents an Italian olive farmer. I don’t know if we actually have any olive farmers in our ancestry, but my husband was in charge of the doll, and I chose not to ask questions.
In any event, this is clearly a situation where we chose to “embrace the imperfection” which is one of the things I am constantly preaching here. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be good enough, and done neatly and on time.
The best part for Jamie? Look in the background of the photo, on the right hand side. One of our “Italy” neighbors brought in cut-up Nutella sandwiches. I think he ate about 15 of them. Now THAT’S what 2nd grade is all about.

His project is great!! You all did a wonderful job. I really don’t understand why teachers feel that they need to give kids a project that clearly needs more parental attention then child. Its really one of my biggest pet peeves. Glad you made through.
nutella is one of the reasons i love my italian heritage too!
