I don’t know what’s going on lately, but everyone I have been talking to lately is totally overwhelmed. Is it the weather? (Here in New York it has been raining incessantly; we are underwater again today.) Is it the time of year? Something in the air?
Springtime is certainly a time of year when, for many of us, kids’ sports kick into higher gear. For my family this is especially the case, because 3 of our 4 kids play lacrosse; what makes it more challenging is that 2 of them are in travel leagues. Lacrosse basically takes over our lives from March through June. We have at least one lacrosse commitment literally every day of the week during that time span.
It also seems as though social obligations pick up at this time of year. Is it me or are there more birthday parties in April and May than at any other time of year? But how is that possible? I mean, not ALL kids could possibly be born during the same 2 months. In addition to birthday parties, there are school luncheons and spring fundraisers and of course the very stressful high school and college reunions. (My 25th high school reunion is this weekend. Yes, I graduated when I was 4.)
Why do all these events always take place in the spring? If I am ever in charge of these decisions, I am going to insist we plan events for February, when everyone has nothing else to do.
So that’s why I feel overwhelmed…. how about you? Are you overwhelmed at this time of year, and if so what factors are contributing to that?

I don’t think it’s the quantity of activities as much as the “milestone” events that happen at the end of the school year that knock us off our emotional balance. Who has time to sit and cry about their child finishing a grade level when there is so much to do? Maybe we need to schedule our micro-emotional displays so that we can move forward instead of feeling overwhelmed.
I agree. My husband and I were talking about it the other day-we have been to 8 birthday parties in march/april and we still have 4 on the schedule for this month!
I definitely feel overwhelmed at this point every year! From Easter events (my husband is a minister) to fundraisers to sports, there is always something…and I’m not sure how it happened, but the vast majority of my kids friends have birthdays from January to May! Throw in the fact that I’m starting dental hygiene school this summer, and its a recipe for stress!
Yes! Oct to Feb is crazy, then a few weeks of quiet & it picks right back up again from April to July!
I can’t speak for everyone, but I know why both of my kids have April birthdays. My husband’s bday is in July and since I have sex once a year (on his bday) well, you know….do the math.
My son isn’t old enough for sports yet, so Spring doesn’t signify an overload social calendar. This year I’m mostly overwhelmed by the fact that winter just will not leave. Last night we were hit by another snow storm which left us with 2″ of snow, and other parts of the state with 10″.
