Sick Days Don’t Totally Suck

I had big plans for today. Even though it is Day 2 of the National Stationery Show, our biggest trade show of the year, I planned to miss it because something even more important is going on: my little sister Liz’s graduation from grad school.

What is it they say about the best-laid plans….something about how they often go awry? After I dropped my oldest 3 children off at school, things definitely went awry. My youngest, Jamie (age 7), threw up in the car, and there went my plans, right out the window. Although Jamie didn’t really seem that sick, other than that one very obvious symptom, our school has a policy that involves mandatory absence in the case of a puking child. We were stuck at home for the day.

First things first: I had to clean the car. My friend Kim-Marie offered to drive over with vodka, but it being 8am, I declined. Then it was play time for me and Jamie. After the usual diversions, like board games and reading, we decided to bake chocolate chip cookies.

First, we gathered our ingredients…..

We used the Toll House Cookie recipe that comes on the back of the package of Nestle Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips.

One of the things I love about being a mom right now is that my kids, even the youngest, are old enough to really help out in the kitchen.

Here, Jamie pours salt into the measuring spoon. The fact that he is doing his own measuring makes this an educational activity, right?

You may have noticed that Jamie is wearing his Sponge-Bob-Square-Pants pajamas. These pajamas have sentimental value for me, as they originally belonged to Andrew, now 15, and have been worn by all my subsequent children.

Here, Jamie adds the flour mixture to the butter/sugar/eggs mixture.

Finally, we added chocolate chips and walnuts, and the result was this beautiful batter….

This might be a good time to mention I have a serious problem with batter. This has been the case ever since I was in 3rd grade and got in trouble for eating so much of the pancake batter that there wasn’t enough left to actually make any pancakes. It is something I am deeply ashamed of. Go ahead and tell me the raw eggs are bad for me, I won’t listen. This is one of my true pleasures in life and you won’t convince me otherwise.

As you can see from his self-portrait below, which I have titled “Licking the Spoon,” Jamie shares my love for batter. (Hopefully this batter consumption won’t lead to another throwing-up incident.)

Jamie put the tray in the oven by himself.

About 10 minutes later, we had a beautiful batch of warm, gooey, delicious chocolate chip cookies.

Congrats Liz! I love you and I am so proud of you sis! These cookies are for you:-)

  1. Of all the ways to spend a sick day, I can’t imagine much better than that! I, too, have an issue with batter. I like to think that it has healing powers– at least I’ve always felt much better afterwards! Congratulations to your sister, and I hope Jamie is feeling 100% soon! :)
