Three's a Company: Multiple Children Mandates Day Planner for Moms

What happens when a mother's juggling act becomes a three-kid circus? According to a USA Today article entitled "For More Parents, Three's a Charm," more moms than ever are finding out.

According to this article, statistics show that the rate of women having more than two children rose steadily in the late 1990s at the height of the economic boom. From 1995 to 2000, the rate of women giving birth to three children rose 7%, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Today, the number of mothers with children has dipped to about 3%, but is still high above where it's been for most of the last generation.

What's most interesting about this new three-children phenomenon is the fact that this higher number of kids directly correlates with higher education and professional levels in their mothers. Translation: as suspected by many multi-tasking mothers, women today are busier than ever before!

The article summarized the cultural shift like this: "For professional women born during the baby boom and now in their 40s and 50s, decisions over family size centered on whether they wanted to have kids at all. Those who did usually stopped at one or two. But women with impressive résumés who were born at the tail end of the baby boom and the start of Generation X no longer see life as a choice between work and motherhood." In other words, women are finally figuring out how to have it all.

These numbers are confirmed other places: the Family and Work Institute states that female managers and professionals are having more children than ever. In 2002, professional women had double the number of children under 18 at home as women in the same position in 1977: 1.4 on average, and women with four-year college degrees or more had triple the average number as women with similar educations in 1977: 1.5.

Woo hoo...wait a second. Let's read between the lines here: Children under eighteen. In the home. College degrees. Professional careers. That's a lot of ducks to keep in a row!

So how are women today keeping it all afloat? The answer is multifold, and its all good news: better incomes, more helpful husbands, and longer life expectancy are all factors that contribute to the new jugglin' mother. But our guess is even the wealthiest, healthiest, best-husband-having mom could use a little help.
